Mechanisms of Ecosystem Recovery in Lake Góreckie, Wielkopolski National Park

An article by Sarkhan Ibrahimov, Renata Dondajewska-Pielka, Lech Kaczmarek, Aleksandra Pełechata, and Mariusz Pełechaty, published in the Journal of Environmental Management, summarises the results of a long-term study on the dynamics of water quality in Lake Góreckie, located in Wielkopolski National Park.

The study revealed an unexpected and distinct increase in water transparency, accompanied by a decline in phytoplankton biomass and the retreat of cyanobacteria, whose massive blooms had been one of the lake’s most serious problems for many years. The recovery process is the result not only of earlier restoration measures undertaken within the lake itself, but also of changes occurring in its catchment. Increased forest cover in the catchment, rising water levels in recent years, and interactions within the lake biocenosis proved to be key factors supporting the long-term regeneration of the ecosystem.
